Portrait Painting Supply List

• Bristle and taklon brushes, sizes 2 - 8; flat or filbert are recommended, but you may use any variety of tip

• 5 - 6 canvases or boards, no smaller than 11” x 14” and no larger than 18” x 24”

• Oil paint, preferably student-grade; I recommend using Winsor-Newton Artisan water-soluble paint:

  • Titanium white or Titanium/Zinc White mix

  • Naples Yellow

  • Cadmium Yellow Light or Cadmium Yellow Light Hue/Hansa Yellow Light

  • Yellow Ochre

  • Cadmium Orange or Cadmium Orange Hue

  • Cadmium Red Light or Cadmium Red Light Hue

  • Permanent Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Rose

  • Cerulean Blue

  • Ultramarine Blue

  • Sap Green

  • Viridian or Pthalo Green

  • Dioxazine Purple or Violet Grey

  • Burnt Umber or Raw Umber

  • Ivory Black

• Palette or palette paper

• Palette box

• Palette knife

• Gamsol or other odorless mineral spirits

• Metal brush washer or glass jar to hold mineral spirits - must have lid to limit fumes

• Paper towels
